Live Without Fear

Writer: Roger SteedRoger Steed

Imagine a young mother raising two toddlers while living in an abusive physical, emotional, and financial relationship with a man who controlled her every move and threatened her daily behavior to the point she had very little self-worth and no one to turn to for help. Miraculously, she sees Haven’s crisis line number during a television program and runs down the street to a pay phone, desperate to talk with someone about her situation. As soon as she arrived at Haven she breathed a huge sigh of relief and felt safe for the first time in years. Her bold move led to a program where she could reclaim her life on her own terms.

The horrible relationship faced by this mother unfortunately is not unique and resembles many of the 30,000 people helped each year by Haven’s comprehensive programs. The organization has been providing treatment, shelter, counseling, advocacy and education for domestic violence and sexual assault victims for over 40 years.

We have an opportunity to help support this necessary and heroic organization.

I am pleased to help spread the word of the good works being accomplished daily at Haven by highlighting it on my 3rd Act podcast, April 15, with an interview of two dedicated professionals who are working diligently to make life better for these individuals.

This is a teaser and preview to get your attention so you will come back next week to hear about the wonderful programs and success stories through my conversation with MiVida Burrus, Director of Development, and Jasmine Valentine, Marketing and Development manager at Haven.

We will discuss the full spectrum of programs and volunteer opportunities at Haven. In addition, we will inform you of important employment opportunities at Haven that you can share with your family and friends.

Most importantly, we hope to inspire you to join the executives and sponsors at Haven for their major fundraising event, Resilience Gala, on Thursday, May 12, at Shepherd Hollow Golf Club.

Please visit the Haven website link below to become familiar with their mission and the scope of services they provide in Oakland County and the various ways you can contribute.
